Hi and welcome to the Savvy Scientist website!
I’m Jeff, a PhD graduate in medical engineering from Imperial. You can read more about my PhD journey in this post, or watch a presentation about my PhD here.
I now work as both a research fellow and CEO of a spin-out company formed around technology I developed as a postdoc.
My aim with this website is to help prospective and current STEM PhD students, no matter your background. More generally I want to help us all be more savvy scientists and live the most fulfilling and impactful lives!
I hope you find the site a useful resource. If you have ideas for content, or collaborations please do get in touch.
Current PhD student? Get featured by sharing your own PhD story!
Why I started this website
None of my immediate family had a degree before me, so I’m fully aware that not everyone has easy access to find out about PhDs.
I want to ensure everyone who is considering pursuing STEM subjects has access to information which may help inform your decision. This includes dispelling PhD myths and increasing accessibility of insider-knowledge. The lack of diversity in science at the moment really isn’t good and I want to try and help.
Beyond PhDs, I’m passionate about self improvement, equality and financial independence so that we can all create the positive impact we want to make.
The site receives a lot of support and guidance from my partner Jo – probably by now the most knowledgeable person about PhDs without actually having one themselves!
This website includes a small number of affiliate links. They’re all clearly indicated and you can read more about my policy towards them here.
Looking for personalised PhD help?
I care deeply about about making as much PhD advice and guidance freely available through this site as possible. But I know that sometimes you might need something more tailored—specific to your situation.
I’m therefore now offering a small number of one-to-one coaching sessions for those who’d like more personalised support. You can find out more about what I offer here.
